Dr. Michael Greger
Episode 47, What We Should Eat
There’s a lot of bad nutrition and even worse nutritional advice out there. Dr. Michael Greger, a physician, New York Times bestselling author, and founder of Nutritionfacts.org, combats both and sticks to the real science to teach us what is the healthiest diet, and how we can live better and longer.
A Sonic Journey
When she came home in a wheelchair with crushing chest pain, 65-year-old Frances Greger, Dr. Michael Greger’s grandmother, appeared certain to die soon. She was diagnosed with end-stage heart disease and the doctors were out of options to save her. Yet, as a last resort, she enrolled in a radical new treatment program centered on a plant-based diet and soon the pain subsided. She regained the ability to walk and went on to live for 3 more decades. This episode inspired Dr. Greger’s career as a physician and later founder of Nutritionfacts.org, where he educates the public on the science of healthy nutrition and its powerful impact on our health.
We can prevent, arrest, and even reverse the progression of heart disease with a healthy diet, which is centered around whole plant food.
Dr. Greger combats two commonplace issues with nutrition: lots of bad or misleading advice that bombards the public with confusing or erroneous ideas, and the lack of interest in or awareness of the power of nutrition among many doctors. Since 2011, he has run Nutritionfacts.org as a premier destination for nutritional insight, with over 2,000 videos on almost every conceivable question people might have about health and nutrition. It’s a non-profit organization committed to giving the public a totally free resource.
You’ll hear Dr. Greger tell the story of how he became so passionate, as well as discuss the connections between nutrition and heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and obesity. He discusses what we should and shouldn’t eat, and why he prefers food from plants instead of animals, but most importantly he offers a hopeful message: that we can through our diet have a tremendous positive impact on our health, and that we can live longer.
